East Hampton's Grey Gardens available as a two-week rental for $135,000 ,THE REAL DEAL, 2/2/2011
Grey Gardens, the famous former home of Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, is available for rent this summer. Bill Williams of Sotheby's International Realty is the exclusive listing agent for the 6,000-square-foot house at 3 West End Road in East Hampton. It's available for the last two weeks in August, including Labor Day, for a total of $135,000, Williams said. Designed by Joseph Greenleaf Thorpe in 1897, the house was immortalized in a 1975 documentary film "Grey Gardens" by Albert and David Maysles. The film chronicled the lives of the reclusive Beales -- the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis -- who lived together in the crumbling mansion for decades. The documentary was adopted into a Broadway musical and a 2009 movie starring Drew Barrymore. After Big Edie's death, Little Edie sold the house in 1979 to former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and his wife, journalist Sally Quinn.
The house was "completely renovated" in 2003, Williams said. "Everything was gutted and done over," Williams said. "It's a very cool old house." Pool at Grey Gardens The eight-bedroom manse sits on a two-acre lot about 300 feet from the beach and across from Steven Spielberg's house, Williams said. A tennis court and gunite pool flank the house, along with the property's famous gardens, the current layout of which Quinn designed, Williams said. Quinn and Bradlee have rented the house in the past, Williams said, but it's not usually available for such a large chunk of August, he said. Asked whether the house's notoriety draws renters or repels them, Williams said the former. "I think people realize that it's completely redone," he said. "There are no more raccoons in the attic. We've gotten calls already. It's a novelty for some people, who want to stay in Grey Gardens. It has that history to it." THE REAL DEAL, 2/2/2011
Sotheby's agent propels new ad campaign, THE REAL DEAL, 1/20/2011
Sotheby's International Realty agent Bill Williams has been named the exclusive advisor to the Town of East Hampton Airport, the brokerage announced today. The distinction comes with exclusive advertising rights for the real estate and home builder category in the corporate and private jet terminal of the airport, allowing Williams to promote his listings without competition. Williams, a broker for six years, will retain the exclusive advertising contract through April 2012, according to Sotheby's. John Gicking, manager of Sotheby's East Hampton office, said that the designation allows Williams to reach a rarefied audience. "Bill recognizes the value of the audience at the airport and is leveraging this opportunity to brand his business with one of the most affluent and influential audiences," Gicking said. TRD
Iconic Grey Gardens Can Be Yours for Two Weeks in August! Wednesday, February 2, 2011, by Ian Ratner
The iconic Grey Gardens estate in East Hampton is officially up for rent this summer! The documentary-ready property is currently owned by writer Sally Quinn and her husband, former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee. Since buying the place in 1979, the couple kicked out the cats and overhauled the 6,000-square-foot home, even scoring a spread in AD along the way. Over the years, the couple has also successfully rented the place, first for 12 years, and then reportedly again for five years to interior designer Celerie Kemble. But now it's your chance to share in the magic (or something like that) for two weeks in August for a mere $135,000. Drew Barrymore not included. Enough about it's history! Let's get to the real meat of this listing. The shingle-style "cottage," which is listed with Sotheby's Bill Williams, has a total of seven bedrooms throughout the second and third floors and four bathrooms overall. Downstairs is a delightful sun room, a renovated kitchen, and a room for the staff. And sprinkled across the property's grey (yet pretty colorful) gardens are all sorts of unique amenities, including a thatched roof pool house, a clay tennis court, and a gunite pool.CURBED.COM
Developer David Wine Lists $14.95M Oceanfront Beach House Monday, May 17, 2010, by Ian Ratner
s vice chairman of development firm Related Companies, David Wine's one of the fortunate few people savvy and successful enough to pull off the ultimate Hamptons overhaul. Luckily for us, he's done just that. And better yet, he's ready to sell it too! The oceanfront Bridgehampton property shown above, which originally came to Wine in 2006 with a structure more "shack" than "cottage" and a $6.75 million price tag, is currently listed with Dana Trotter and Bill Williams of Sotheby's for a cool $14.95 million. Wine claims that the house's smaller scale renders it "more livable" than most Hamptons homes. While true, that oceanfront soaking tub (and the peeping Toms who come with it) definitely looses this house some practicality points.
